What Is Golf Swing Tempo?
Golf swing tempo describes the timing and rhythm of your swing.
It is different from swing speed. Swing speed measures how fast the club is moving, while tempo describes the timing between different parts of the swing.
What does a 3:1 golf swing tempo mean?
You may have heard of a 3:1 tempo.
This means the backswing takes approximately three times as long as the downswing. For example, a 0.75-second backswing and a 0.25-second downswing would create a 3:1 ratio.
That does not mean every golfer needs exactly the same tempo.
Why does tempo matter?
Consistency is often more useful than chasing one perfect number.
If your best shots repeatedly happen around a similar tempo, that can tell you something about your swing. Changes in tempo can also appear when you try to swing harder, become tired or feel pressure on the course.
This becomes particularly useful when tempo is connected to the result:
Tempo → Swing Speed → Shot Distance → Shot Location
Alvare is developing a removable sensor inside the golf glove designed to collect swing and round data, including tempo and swing speed.
The goal is to bring this information together in the Alvare app so golfers can identify patterns across an entire round rather than looking at isolated swings.
In the future, we plan to explore live and AI-powered coaching, where these patterns could be used to provide more personalized feedback.
There may not be one perfect tempo for everyone. Understanding your own repeatable tempo can be much more valuable.
