What Is a Good Golf Swing Speed?

p>Swing speed is one of the most common measurements in golf. It describes how fast the clubhead is moving during the swing, usually measured in miles per hour (mph).

But faster does not always mean better.

What is a good swing speed?

Swing speed varies depending on the golfer, club, technique and physical ability. Many amateur golfers have a driver swing speed somewhere around 80–100 mph, while advanced players can exceed 100 mph.

The important thing is how effectively you use that speed.

A controlled swing with good contact can produce a better shot than a faster swing that misses the center of the clubface.

Swing speed and distance

Higher clubhead speed creates the potential for more distance, but speed is only one part of the equation.

Contact, launch conditions and club choice also affect the result. This is why swing speed becomes more useful when combined with information such as shot distance and shot location.

Why track your swing speed?

Tracking your own swing speed over time can reveal patterns.

You might discover that your longest drives do not come from your fastest swings, or that slightly reducing your speed improves consistency.

At Alvare, we are developing a removable sensor that sits inside the golf glove and is designed to track data including swing speed and tempo. Combined with shot and round data in the Alvare app, the goal is to help golfers better understand what happens during their game.

In the future, we also plan to explore AI-powered coaching, using collected data to identify patterns and provide more personalized feedback.

Ultimately, there is no perfect swing speed.

The more useful question is not just “How fast can I swing?” but “What happens when I swing at this speed?”
